The British love affair with curries and Indian food is well known and anyone who visits the UK on a regular basis will know that some of the best value restaurants around serve Indian food.

When friends from Spain visit London I always recommend eating in Indian restaurants and was surprised to hear that one of the things that put them off – apart from being unfamiliar with the food – is that Indian restaurants look expensive.

When in Britain…

And when I though about it they're right; with linen tablecloths and napkins and tasteful décor they do look like they should be expensive and usually the waiters are well dressed too; however Indian food is surprisingly cheap and with a few pointers in the right direction – i.e. nothing too hot – I think anyone can enjoy Indian food; my friends certainly learnt how to with dishes such as chicken tikka, which is tasty without being spicy hot and served with rice or naan bread makes a hearty meal.

…and when not

As much as I like tikka and tandoori dishes my real favourite is chicken curry. When I first moved to Barcelona there was little choice, the only place I knew a Pakistani run place in the centre called El Gallo Kiriko which was really cheap and so full of students, but later an Indian run restaurant opened close to home. However, the curries were always lacking heat and so the best option for curry was always to cook them myself.

Luckily these days there are a few more restaurants in Barcelona specialising in curries and Indian food, but I still like to cook my own chicken curry recipes. While they do vary in intensity and flavour, I enjoy the preparation and since we have a big selection of spices at home it is easy to mix the right spices together, fry some onion and get cooking.

How to get started

I've got several books devoted to curry recipes and Indian food on my bookshelves, but my favourite is the Indian Restaurant Cookbook by Pat Chapman, published by the Curry Club in the UK. It has dozens of recipes and includes sections on all aspects of cooking curries and other Indian dishes and I recommend it above all others.

While Mark Hazard doesn't claim to be an authority on chicken curry recipes or Indian food, he does know what he likes to eat and knows how to cook a few. If you are interested in Indian food follow the link for more information on chicken curry recipes.
